Ken Salazar, the new Secretary of Interior, has decided to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list on Idaho and Montana. The release program began with 65 wolves in 1995 and has been successful with numbers of 1,600 across the region. Humans had drove the species to almost extection and now that the numbers are up he will remove them from the list and began their second slow journey to extection.
Ken also stated that he will be the first to stand in line for a hunting licence when hunting seasons is open to control the population. He also stated that he would like to see the population to be 100 in Idaho, which is way below the state management plan of 800.
I think that it maybe more of a personal choice to remove the gray wolf because he seems to want a trophy wolf a great deal. My opinion is that he is some what stupid for stating that he will be the first in line for a licence. I also believe that if we made the efforts to re populate the breed, why would we then once again destroy it. The article is found at www.nytimes.com/2009/04/13/opinion/13mon4.html?_r=1
